Oryx Hunting With Poleo Creek Outfitters! Imported in 1969, New Mexico has proved to be prime habitat for the African Oryx. These Big Game Exotics have been hunted in New Mexico since 1974 with a great success rate to those who are lucky enough to be drawn for these hunts. Our Oryx hunts with a rifle take place from August to February in some of the best Oryx country that New Mexico has to offer. All of our hunts take place on the famous White Sands Missile Range which includes Rhodes Canyon and Stallion Range. Both areas combined cover about 2 million acres. Most of the hunting elevations are upper sonoran 4,500 feet (desert landscape). Characteristics: Oryx can weigh up to 600 pounds, and stand about 47 inches at the shoulder. Both males and females have horns that average 34 inches or longer. Their distinctive markings allow them to hide among desert shrubs and lava rock beds. We use different techniques to hunt Oryx, mostly spot, stalk, and glassing tactics. I can't emphasize enough about glassing. Make sure you bring a good set of binoculars, 10x42 minimum, and a spotting scope. Most of the animals we've taken have been glassed at more than 650 yards. We use 4WD trucks to reach areas and then spend most of the time on foot. Our Oryx hunts have a 100% opportunity with a 100% kill ratio. An Oryx hunt can be a very demanding sport with endless hours of tracking, hiking, or stalking. We encourage clients to be in the best physical shape to increase your chances of harvesting an Oryx. Some hunters do go home empty handed, that's why it's called hunting. The entire staff is paid to do a job whether it is guiding, cooking or packing out meat. Base your tip on the quality and level of service, not whether you do or do not take an animal. There is no set amount for a tip, if you had a great time and your guide did everything he could do, and the food was great, do what you can. The staff truly appreciates the tips.
